Labor Day 2017 delivered a gorgeous three day weekend for many who likely gave scarcely a thought to the significance of Labor Day, a holiday that offers us an opportunity to reflect on the progress American workers have made and to acknowledge the work that still needs to be done.
Because of the courage and persistence of labor activists dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, American workers have protections that workers couldn’t even dream of a century ago. In 2017, most of us tend to take for granted many workplace benefits and protections that would not exist without the efforts of many, past and present.
For example, federal laws are in place to ensure that workplaces are safe and free of hazards. The Americans with Disabilities Act protects disabled workers from discrimination and directs employers to provide reasonable accommodations so they can do their jobs. Under the FMLA, workers can take time off to care for a child or treat a serious illness without fear of losing their jobs and workers’ compensation provides an important safety net for workers injured on the job.
All told, American workers are among the most fortunate in the world. However, it requires vigilance to ensure that employers are meeting their obligation to prevent such things as discrimination or retaliation in the workplace, unsafe and unhealthful conditions, or other violations of law that are in place to protect workers.
