With over 400 fatalities on Iowa roads last year, lawmakers are considering various bills to deter drunk drivers and drivers distracted by their cell phones or other devices.
The proposed bill targeting impaired drivers would require drivers arrested for or convicted of drunk driving to participate in twice-daily sobriety monitoring. Additionally, those in the program would be ordered to install ignition interlock devices to prevent them from starting their car when impaired.
Distracted drivers are also a problem in the state. Proposed legislation seeks to make texting while driving a primary offense, making it easier for law enforcement to issue citations. Another bill seeks to expand Iowa’s homicide by vehicle statute to include the use of electronic devices while driving.
Impaired driving and distracted driving are leading causes of car accidents in Iowa and across the nation. If you or a family member has been injured in an Iowa car or truck accident, it is important to contact an experienced lawyer for help.
