Iowa tree crews are busy trimming trees during the winter months and most of us give barely a thought to the danger tree workers face everyday. In fact, the work of tree trimming, pruning and removal is recognized as having many safety hazards and, according to an industry report, tree workers are 56 times more likely to die from a work injury than those in all other industries combined.
Tree work involves climbing trees, sometimes using ladders, working at heights while using chain saws, hand and power tools, working near energized overhead power lines and downed lines, and other hazardous operations while trimming, pruning, felling and removing trees, branches and brush.
The most common fatality accidents associated with tree trimming care involve being struck by or against objects including falling trees and branches, falls to lower levels, and electrocutions from contact with overhead power lines. Some tree worker accidents are unfathomable, such as a recent incident in California, where a tree worker was killed after he was entangled in a rope caught and pulled into an unguarded wood chipper.
The tree trimming company involved was subsequently fined more than $23K for seven violations, underscoring that tree workers not only have a dangerous job to begin with, but are also at the mercy of employers who may or may not be following safety procedures.
With higher fatalities occurring among smaller companies who may not have the resources to employ occupational safety professionals, and might lack the knowledge, skills, and resources to identify safety hazards and develop safe work practices, tree trimming workers are particularly vulnerable to a serious work injury.
