Sadly, a mechanic for a waste disposal company was killed after being involved in an incident while on the job. According to local news reports, the Republic Services employee, a 40-year-old man from Bettendorf, was working on the hydraulics of a sanitation truck when the accident occurred.
When most people think of dangerous occupations, sanitation or recycling work usually doesn’t come to mind at first glance, however, according to a 2013 Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics report, only loggers, fishermen, aircraft pilots and roofers are at a greater risk of death while on the job.
When we think of sanitation work, we usually think of city trucks rumbling around our neighborhoods, picking-up our trash, recyclables and clearing snow in the winter, but we rarely consider the work to be inherently dangerous for the hard working men and women in the industry.
Private sanitation companies are particularly vulnerable to on the job injuries and fatalities because, lacking government oversight, workers may not receive adequate training and equipment and vehicles used to perform their duties may fall into disrepair.
The risk to sanitation workers is underscored when looking at the multitude of accidents that occur every year. Accidents include falls, struck by accidents from trucks and equipment, accidents involving other motorists, crush injuries and the like. While many companies are subsequently cited by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for safety violations, unfortunately, problems in the industry persist.
