The National Safety Council reports that traumatic brain injuries (TBI’s) represent a quarter of recent construction fatalities in the U.S. The construction industry has the greatest number of TBI’s of all workplaces in the nation.
More than half of work-related traumatic brain injuries occur as a result of falls. Using scaffolds or ladders and working on roofs pose the greatest risk of fatalities from falls for construction employees.
The smaller the organization – 20 employees or fewer – the higher the risk of a construction fatality. Workers 65 and older are at higher risk than younger workers to die from a TBI as are foreign-born workers.
Working in construction is risky business, with the chance of suffering a fatal injury believed to be as high as one death per 200 full time employees over a 45 year working period. Traumatic brain injuries figure most prominently in the equation.
Research conducted from 2003 to 2010 by the American Journal of Industrial Medicine points to the need for safety interventions in the construction industry to reduce the number of fall-related TBI’s especially among vulnerable workers. Employers have a responsibility to address problems in the workplace to keep workers safe, particularly with regard to construction worker falls.
